Reconstructive outpatient surgery is carried out in privacy and counselling with empathy.

If you are considering hymenoplasty in India (repair of the hymen) as an option, you must receive accurate, medical information and discreet care. At Vardaan, our surgeons provide evidence-based, trauma-informed care in an outpatient safe space. Here we outline what hymenoplasty is, who may wish it, what the surgery is, recovery and what you can expect, risk and counselling and consent we provide.

What is hymenoplasty?

Hymenoplasty surgery (more colloquially, hymenorrhaphy or hymen repair) is a minor reconstructive surgery involving restoration or recreation of hymenal tissue at the introitus. It is undertaken with the aim of reconstructing the anatomical integrity of the hymen for personal reasons, cultural reasons, reconstructive or restorative reasons. It is performed as a day-care surgery with adequate anaesthesia and subsequent minimal observation and discharge on the first day.

  • Hymenoplasty is a surgery
  • Hymenoplasty is one's choice. Typical reasons patients decide on it are:
  • Reconstructive surgery after birth, injury, or accidental trauma.
  • Restoration is sought after by adult patients for personal reasons.
  • Reconstructive surgery for survivors of sexual abuse looking for reconstructive treatment (provided with trauma-informed counseling and care).

Important: We do hymenoplasty in Delhi only in consenting adults (18 and older). We do not do it in minors. Each case is personally evaluated individually in a private consultation for an informed, voluntaristic decision.

The way we care (our clinical philosophy)

  • Confidentiality: Consultations, notes and procedures are deemed utterly confidential and are not disclosed without signed authorization by the patient or as mandated by law.
  • Informed Consent: We clarify benefits, indications and risks in lay language and supply a written statement and time to ask questions.
  • Trauma-informed care: We ensure protection, options and referral to psychosocial care if desired for survivors of sexual abuse.
  • Clinical safety: These are surgical procedures carried out in accredited clinical centers with qualified surgeons using relevant infection control and anaesthesia techniques.

What is performed during the process?

Pre-op assessment: A confidential medical review is undertaken to assess suitability, review medical history, discuss anaesthesia options, and answer questions. Pre-operative instructions will be provided.

The process:

  • Generally carried out with sedation and local anaesthesia, regional block, or general anaesthesia if so desired.
  • The surgeon reapproximates the remaining hymenal tissue and often employs a small immediate mucosal flap as needed.
  • Fine, dissolvable sutures are applied; surgical time is usually between 30 and 60 minutes.
  • The patient is monitored briefly in recovery and discharged with written aftercare instructions.

Recovery & aftercare

Mild discomfort and faint spotting are usual for the first 7–10 days. Pain medication and post-wound care guidance are given.

Avoid sexual intercourse, tampon usage, swimming and vaginal douching for at least 6 weeks post-operatively, until clinical certainty of healing at follow-up. The exact advice will vary personally, your surgeon will formulate the time.

Follow-up visits: Routine check at 7–10 days and then every approximately 6 weeks to ensure healing.

Inform the clinic immediately if you develop fever, excessive bleeding, excessive pain, pus discharge, or infection.

Risk, restraints and reasonable expectations

Hymenoplasty surgery is safe with minimal downtime, yet no surgery is without risk. Complications of a potential outcome are: infection, bleeding, scarring, asymmetry, coitus-associated pain and occasional requirement of revision surgery. It is crucial to bear in mind:

First sex bleeding is not a certainty. Bleeding is variable depending on tissue type, scarring and other factors and will never necessarily be used as a medical marker of "virginity."Anesthetic hazards are uncommon but exist; preoperative screening will list them.

Anesthetic hazards are uncommon but exist; preoperative screening will list them.

Both surgical and mental care are generally recommended for patients who are sexually assaulted.

Your surgeon will go over risks and alternatives and get your informed consent.

Legal, ethical and age requirements

  • Hymenoplasty is a legal procedure when performed on consenting adults.
  • We need signed informed consent and need to ensure that the decision is made voluntarily and without coercion.
  • We do not do it with minors.
  • We will also provide counseling and letter writing as needed; if there are forensic/legal matters relating to sexual assault, we will offer appropriate referrals and support as outlined in best practice.
